That piece of history is called the Portals of the Past, and they are all that remains of the Towne Mansion from the 1906 earthquake. Arnold Genthe shot an iconic picture of the devastation of the city through the remaining entryway columns of the mansion. They were donated to Golden Gate Park due to their historical value.
