The empanada wars are heating up in the City. People are definitely taking sides. It's almost as intense as the burrito and taco wars. Personally, I love them all. I especially like Venga Empanada in the Mission.
Every culture I can think of has a version of fried or baked dough stuffed with vegetable or meat. The ingredients are fresh. The combinations are interesting. Most include cheese. You can ask for substitute fillings for larger catered orders. I like the California Veggie. The raisins give a surprise of sweetness. I hear great things about the Gaucho Chicken. Sweet empanadas are available for dessert or pick up a few galletas (cookies).
Eat in or take out. It's a quiet space that has a steady flow of people but is rarely crowded. A hidden gem.
Having good vegetarian and vegan options is a plus. But, this is a lovely place with really nice people. Leave Venga with a smile and a warm tummy on a any day.
