It's your typical neighbourhood market – charming and full of social life. Find everything you need here, from seafood and meat to fresh fruits and vegetables; there are also gourmet Spanish products, like wine and cheese, tasty street food snacks and rich spices.
As with any other local market, it only opens mid-day, so keep that in mind when planning your shopping for the week. Saturday is also a good day to come by but do it first thing in the morning because it gets really crowded. On Sundays, the market is closed, as you can imagine.
What I like about it is the livelihood you find in the surroundings. The neighbourhood lives in and around the market, there are flower shops, cafeterias, and all kinds of restaurants everywhere you look. Its location, right next to a church, adds to its charm. It is rare to find visitors who are not buying food, you may spot one or two with their cameras out, but mostly, you will see people grocery shopping.
The market building is quite interesting too. The external panels in every colour are said to represent the colourful food inside and are recognizable from afar. Pay a visit when visiting this part of Valencia; some people say local markets are the best part of every city.
