Venice is surely known for being ancient. Everything in this city — the buildings, the walls, the streets, the roofs — everything is permeated with antiquity. Many are the traditions that have been passed down over the decades and survived until today. Inside Rizzardini pastry shop, the oldest patisserie in Venice, tradition traces back hundreds of years, all the way to the mid-18th century.
In the past, sweets were just for a few bunch of privileged people and to be eaten in only a few special occasions. On the contrary, this marvellous pastry shop is filled with both tourists and locals treating themselves to a bite of antiquity mixed with incomparable taste.
Located in San Polo district, not far from Rialto Bridge, this pastisserie is likely to be full of people. Due both to its proximity with the main attractions of the island and the quite small capacity of the shop, Rizzardini is often overrun by sweet teeth, but I can assure that the wait is by all means worthwhile.
Rizzardini’s evergreen sweets are: bussolà, meringhe and mandorlati. During the weekends, if you are early and lucky, you can have the pleasure to taste a “festivo”, a special sweet made only on Saturdays and Sundays.
Last but not least, during Venice Carnival (end of January – February), Rizzardini is one of the best places to get “frittelle”, Venice’s typical doughnuts served plain, filled with cream, or with raisins.
