If you sometimes fantasize about being Sissi, this is the ideal spot in Vienna to make your dreams come true. Since basically every travel guides recommends visiting the premises of Schönbrunn, the summer residence of the aforementioned Austrian Empress, chances are high you’ll decide to explore the castle and the magnificent gardens yourself. You can get lost in there for hours, which may make you work up an appetite. This is where Meierei comes into play.
It’s a tiny building, painted in turquoise and beige colors and was built back in 1830. It offers a wide variety of local food and drinks (also vegetarian and vegan options). If it’s still warm enough colorful chairs and tables are spread out in the spacious outdoors. I then suggest getting a table in front of the building, which enables you to overlook the perfectly trimmed garden.
To give you a heads up: food and drinks, although of good quality, admittedly are a bit pricey. I still love to brunch there for the very peculiar atmosphere of its surroundings, which always make me feel set back into another time and world. If you are in the mood to be all Sissi, I suggest ordering the traditional sweet Austrian dish of Kaiserschmarren. Legend has it that it was invented especially for the marriage of Sissi and Franz Joseph in 1854.
