There are a lot of places to dance salsa in DC, but this is definitely one of my favorite spots. One of the things I enjoy most about the Salsa Room is that the people that show up are really there to dance. If you want to go out for a night of salsa dancing in the DC area, you won't find a better place. I also like that the DJ at TSR going plays salsa, bachata, merengue for a majority of the night (whereas some places will have a salsa night where the DJ plays more hip-hop, reggaeton, and pop music).
The doors open at 20:00 on Friday and Saturday nights. You can participate in the beginner dance lessons that start at 20:15 and/or the intermediate dance lesson at 21:15. If you choose to arrive at The Salsa Room early for the lessons, you do not need to bring a partner. There are usually more than enough people there by themselves so you have plenty of people to practice with. Once the lessons end, the dance floor opens up for the rest of the night. If you would rather skip the lessons, you can still come in early and hang out until the lessons are over.
The cover charge is $20 (but free for women between 20:00 - 23:00). There's also a dress code. If you arrive in sneakers, baggy or ripped jeans, or a hat, you may not be allowed entry.
