While the Cascade Complex is one of Yerevan's top tourist attractions, many visitors overlook the hidden gems inside. One of my favorites is the Mural by Grigor Khanjyan. This six-meter-tall triptych is the centerpiece of its room and the only exhibited work of art in the space. It captures three of the most important moments in Armenian history.
The first panel honors the creation of the Armenian alphabet by Mesrop Mashtots in 405 AD, a milestone that played a crucial role in preserving the Armenian language and culture. The second section is dedicated to the Vardanants War of 451, a defining battle fought to protect the Armenian Christian Church – another cornerstone of Armenian identity. The third panel reflects on modern Armenian history, from independence to the figures who shaped it.
What makes the Mural by Grigor Khanjyan so interesting is its depth and little details – there's always something new to discover. Each scene is a visual representation of Armenia's resilience and spirit. It's a place where you can lose yourself in Armenian history and art for hours.
If you're already at the Cascade Complex in Yerevan, don't miss the other exceptional artworks inside, like the Sasuntsi Davit relief. Best of all, all exhibitions at the Cafesjian Center are free to visit – just step inside and immerse yourself in the art and history.
