Golden Hare has been a favourite spot of mine for a while however, much to my disappointment, they recently moved from my neck of the woods over to the new town. Turns out it was a phenomenal move.
The new location on St Stephen Street in Stockbridge puts Golden Hare in amongst a whole range of boutique shops and interesting restaurants. It’s a little better suited than their previous location in the stag-do-tastic Grassmarket.
They still have a great selection of fact and fiction, classic and modern books as well as a children’s section. It has a bigger collection than before but still not huge, but that’s not the aim here. The books are hand-selected by the staff and they’re all beautiful editions that seem wasted hiding on bookshelves.
There is a book group on the first Tuesday of each month that you can sign up for in the store and the shop sometimes runs other events which are advertised on their webpage.
I find it impossible to nip in and out to pick up a book; if I go in I commit a good chunk of time for browsing the shelves, chatting with the staff and talking myself out of not buying all of the books I pick up. My favourite thing about the new shop though is the large fireplace in the middle room, making it even more inviting to settle in and stay awhile.
