One of my favourite places to go when I want a quiet escape from the busy city life is, surprisingly, right in the city. Just a stone’s throw from Central Station lies an area that amazes me every time: Western Islands (Westelijke Eilanden). They were built between 1611 and 1615 and, until the end of the 19th century, this area was home to shipyards, small industries and warehouses, mixed with residential buildings. Today, many of those old warehouses have been transformed into sought-after and very expensive apartments.
These islands feel like a city within the city, a world of their own where time seems to slow down. I lived on one of them for about a year, and it was as peaceful as I had imagined.
The prettiest of the three is Prinseneiland, but strolling from one island to another is always a good idea, to admire every hidden garden, wooden bridge, boat and the houses with red shutters. I love the cobbled streets and the many quiet spots near the water. I always make sure to pass by the petting zoo on Bickersgracht and the palm garden on Prinseneiland (yes, there are actual palm trees in Amsterdam!).
There are a couple of bars and restaurants in and around the area, but they’re not the main attraction. The real charm of these islands lies in the sense of calm and quiet they offer to those who wander through.
