In Belgrade, as in many other European cities, monthly cyclists’ rides called Belgrade critical mass (Beogradska kritična masa) are organized. This event happens every last Saturday of the month, and it is organized by the cyclist organization called Streets for Cyclists (Ulice za bicikliste).
This tradition has been going on for more than ten years, gathering Belgrade cyclists to jointly ride through the streets of Belgrade. Sometimes, it is a ride dedicated to drawing attention to a concrete traffic problem, as Belgrade is not that welcoming toward cyclists, and sometimes it is just a ride to end our months together on a bike. Anyhow, it is always a positive energy. There are a few bikes with speakers playing music in the Critical mass to keep everybody entertained, and there are many interesting people to have a chat with while you ride through the streets of Belgrade. Some of the most fun moments in my life are connected to this event and some of the most interesting people I know I met here.
This ride starts from Republic Square at 5 pm; during winter months, gatherings are at 3 pm, and it usually lasts around 1 hour. Organization Streets for Cyclists offers free bike rentals for this event, so feel free to contact them and pick up a bike if you are up for a ride. Theroutess vary each time, so if you get to visit Critical Masss more than once, you will get to see different parts of Belgrade.
