Although I pride myself in finding cool, hidden spots in Belgrade, I must admit it took me dozens of walks down the beautiful Svetogorska street to notice that the plain blue (sometimes green!) door on a random wall between two buildings lead to a bar and not to a private garden.
KC Shaka is a small bar, nestled between two residential buildings in a busy street in downtown Belgrade. The garden fits only a couple of tables, but the cool decor, a whimsical mural on the facade to the side of the garden and beautiful lighting at night make this place the perfect summer getaway.
As it is well-hidden and not very active on social media, you also have the added surprise factor of not knowing what kind of night out to expect: sometimes, you'll be the only guests there, drinking a delicious Gin & Tonic and hanging out with the resident cats, and other times you'll stumble upon a party.
Let my experience here be a guide to finding cool places in Belgrade: keep your eyes open, and if some unassuming entrance seems like it has a hidden gem behind it, check it out!

"Galerija Δokolade Premier" in Belgrade is owned by people who really try hard to please chocolate lovers. My favourite is the milk chocolate raspberries.

"Stari Ε‘lep" is the perfect restaurant for the summer days/daze in Belgrade. Its name means 'the old barge' - I'd recommend a fish soup and salad here.

"Radecki club/restaurant" on Belgrade's Zemun quay: a true local oasis - no espresso here, just plain good old 'domestic' Turkish coffee. Lots to see here.

"Balkan Ekspres restaurant" is in Belgrade's Zemun, a city of its own. This place is worth visiting if only just for the views from inside the train car...

"Illegal Cinema" in Belgrade is a very special institution. Everyone can suggest a film for screening, if they start a discussion about it at the end...

The daily menu can, for example, include pumpkin with leek and poppy seeds, Thai curry with dried banana, chutney and raita. Or the good old veggie burger.

The Residence of Princess Ljubica in Belgrade is one of the few buildings that date to early the 19th c. Discover the bourgeois Serbia of the past!

Sinnerman Jazz Club in Belgrade hosts great jazz bands of course, but I really like their terrace with the great city views and its dark beer on tap!

After 40 years of providing the people of Belgrade with the best steaks, "Morava Butcher Shop" is now the first Meat Concept Store in town...

The "Stefan Nemanja Monument" in Belgrade is the city's largest - it always reminds me of The Lord of the Rings...
