Beneath one of the most visited tourist spots in Belgrade – Kalemegdan, there is a much less recognized part of the fortress, which is also one of the biggest green spaces in the city center. This part is known as Lower Kalemegdan, and for me, it is one of the best places if you need to relax and escape the city concrete.
This is a spacious park divided into two big parts, with many trees that provide much-needed shade during the hot summer months. There are also large spaces great for some sports activities with friends or pets, which can be seen in large numbers here playing with their owners. I find this park great for a walk, as it is close to the river bank, and you can just continue your walk there, enjoying other scenic views of the river. Additionally, it is a perfect space for a picnic and chilling with friends or by yourself.
What additionally makes this park interesting are different, centuries-old elements and parts of the fortress that you can admire but in a much calmer environment compared to the upper part of the fortress. And here, you can also find the Belgrade planetarium, which occasionally holds projections open to the public.
