""The Museum of African Art" in Belgrade is the only museum in Southeast Europe that is wholly dedicated to the arts and cultures of Africa..."

The Belgrade Museum of African Art was opened in 1977 based on the collection of a Yugoslav diplomat, Zdravko Pečar and his wife, Veda. Today, is it the only museum in the region of South East Europe that is wholly dedicated to the arts and cultures of the African continent.

Most exhibits are masks, musical instruments and other cultural artifacts that are proof of the developed handicrafts and imaginations of the native peoples of West Africa. Although the museum is small and the explanations are not so extensive, the displays themselves are very interesting.

I especially love visiting the Museum of African Art during festivities such as the Afro Festival which brings us closer to the "Dark Continent". It is a time when the embassies of various African countries present to the public art, crafts, souvenirs and culinary specialties in a beautiful spacious garden in front of the museum.

The museum is leaning towards modernization and keeps organizing different workshops such as painting, African jewelry or tailoring/ sewing/ embroidery workshops.
