Carpe diem.
That’s what Michel Proye said to himself when he quit his job in IT back in 2011. Leaving behind the office, he started a career on the land. His new working place? Fruit-Time, his own self-pick-farm in the bucolic Neerpede countryside in Anderlecht.
Neerpede is dotted with pastures, windmills and farms (see the Ketelhoeve article). The hilly landscape makes for a perfect bike outing. Getting to Fruit-Time, you will pass by picturesque streets such as Cow Pond Street, Butterfly Street, Beet Street and Wheat Street. Until you finally arrive in Apple Tree Street.
Surprisingly, no apple trees are to be found in Fruit-Time. This lush 1-hectare garden of Eden does burst with fruit bushes. Fruit-Time’s concept is as pure as it is simple. From June till September, you can handpick your own raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, redcurrants or blackcurrants. Next, you put them on a scale and pay for your handpicked fruit by weight. After your fruit hunt, you can relax under the shady trees to have a drink and lick an ice cream.
Before I forget: next to berries and currants, you can also pick a flower bouquet of dahlia’s, asters or gladioli.
Carpe diem!
