Sicily is an Italian island. Surrounded by Mediterranean waters. Where history abounds. With marvelous views and the best food in the world. A bit like Sapori Meditarranei when I think of it.
Sapori Meditarranei (Italian for ‘Flavours of the Mediterranean’) is a Sicilian-Italian delicacy shop in Anderlecht. Near the canal and the ‘little island’ neighbourhood. In the historic Wayez shopping street, since 1998. Upon entering, this small store boasts views of Italy’s finest foods.
Sicilian classics such as arancini (rice balls), cannoli (biscuits filled with ricotta), and limoncello (sweet digestive wine) will catch your eye, as will food from other Italian regions. Everything has a spark of genius to it: raisin-infused cheese, fennel-spiced sausages, four kinds of olives, and intricate layers of lasagne.
The Wayez street is full of fast food, but Saporei Mediterranei offers the opposite. This delicacy store is all about slow food. The graceful owner, Lorenzo Aleo, will be a guide for your tastebuds. Which wine to pair with which food? At what temperature to preserve and serve? Lorenzo will be glad to give you his best advice.
Do be careful. Take the warning of the Belgian band ECHT to heart. This band used to rehearse nearby and was drawn to Sapori Mediterranei every day. “When we entered the store, we always wanted to buy everything. We all gained 15 kgs.”
Not alarmed by that weight gain? Then consider also paying a visit to Crèmerie Saint-Guidon, the Belgian version of Saporei Mediterranei on the other end of the Wayez street!
