The first sentence that Ivo – the 79 year old bartender and owner – will ask you, when you visit “Gute Stute” is: Don’t you have a home? It’s his opener to every conversation, before you can order your drinks. If you sit inside – outside they only have a few spots amidst large plants – you’ll quickly notice the real-size horse by the window, which is the name-giver to the place. “Stute” translates as female horse from German. Apart from the good horse, you’ll love the wooden staircase and bar, with lots of old-fashioned decoration.
Gute Stute is laid back, unconventional and you can even bring your own food, but Ivo will also happily serve you some free peanut flips. When you pay your bill, be prepared to drink one of two liqueur shots with Ivo (either Slivovitz or Kruscovac) – legend has it that Ivo decides on the sum of your bill depending on your liqueur choice and behaviour when drinking it, so don’t be surprised if you and your friends had the same drinks but end up paying different amounts.
