There’s something thrilling about stepping into a moving elevator — and no, I don’t mean one that just feels old. I mean a real, vintage Paternoster lift, the kind that never stops moving, has no doors, and is now almost extinct. You can still ride one in Frankfurt, and it's hiding inside the Flemings Hotel Eschenheimer Tor.
These chain-driven lifts were once a symbol of modernity — now they’re more like urban legends. Except this one is real. Step into the lobby of the Flemings and look for the wooden lift slowly ticking by. The rhythm is hypnotic. Getting in or out is a small act of courage, and it never gets old. The best part? This Paternoster takes you up to the rooftop restaurant and terrace, which offers great views over central Frankfurt.
There’s a myth (and a bit of fear) that if you ride a Paternoster “over the top,” you’ll flip upside down or get stuck. Don’t worry. The cabins just loop slowly around and come back down. I’ve done it and survived it.
Interestingly, the University of Frankfurt also still has a Paternoster, but due to insurance rules, students need to sign a permission to ride it! At Flemings, though, anyone brave enough can go for a spin — no forms required, just a bit of luck that it’s actually up and running.
After the ride, I treat myself to a drink on the terrace. I’ve earned it. Cheers to the time travellers and the wonderful sunset view up here.
