If you're into raw concrete, circular geometry, and a slice of 1970s utopia, there’s a bold hidden gem waiting for you in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen: the Sonnenring. This striking residential complex stands out as one of the city's most impressive examples of brutalist architecture — and yes, I truly like it.
The building forms a complete ring, with layers of apartments rising around a central courtyard. It’s a space that feels simultaneously massive and intimate — and once you're there, you get the sense that this structure was meant to be more than just housing. It's a vision of a different kind of urban life.
To truly appreciate the Sonnenring, take the time to walk around the entire structure. Each side offers a different impression — from the stepped balconies to the dense rhythm of windows. Don’t skip the northern upper terrace (you can access it via stairs). From there, you get a slightly raised perspective and a great view and the almost sci-fi vibe of the place.
It’s quiet, slightly surreal, and definitely far from the usual tourist spots. If you enjoy architecture, urban design, or photography, the Sonnenring is a must.
Tip: Go in the late afternoon for warm sunlight and dramatic shadows on the concrete — perfect for photos.
