I can't imagine anything more local than spending a beautiful Saturday morning at the central market place in Ljubljana. The lively open-air market has always been a place for the locals to meet and enjoy themselves together. Ljubljana Central Market is open daily (except Sundays) and it is possible to buy seasonal fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers. Products are mostly produced on the outskirts of town and villages around Slovenia. This is also a great place to observe townspeople and have a little chat with salesmen and saleswomen who have many years of experience and have heard many interesting stories from their customers. I always like to talk to them.
The present market building was designed by the architect Jože Plečnik. This picturesque public market also has a fish market on the lower level of the market hall and a series of small food shops along the river Ljubljanica. I like to buy freshly baked curd strudel with raisins at the nearby Pečjak bakery. You can also find meat, dried fruits and nuts stalls, as well as a flower market at the junction of Pogačar Square and Vodnik Square. A large diversity of flowers are offered in a number of stalls. You name it, they've got it!
Just behind a corner, you can also join Open Kitchen food market on Fridays during the summer months. What a wonderful place to meet nice people and eat some delicious food! :)
