Madrid’s Licores Cabello is for you if you relish the discovery of an unspoilt old shop while travelling. A little taste of tradition. Liquor has been sold from number 19 of the Calle Echegaray since 1902. The building is protected, as is the wooden facade, so its charm is safe from any misguided attempts to update or modernise.
Along with the old exterior, Licores Cabello has an astonishing variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks for sale inside. They have a wide selection of wines to suit all pockets, and you can also discover some weirder flavours if your tastes run to the unique. How about a shot of Leche de Pantera, an unlikely blend of Gin and milk? Or Ratafia, a delicious sweet brew featuring green walnut, lemon zest, cherry, carnation, mint, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon?
If wine is your thing, the helpful staff will shepherd you through your purchase if you need some guidance. One of the great things about Spain is how €5 can buy you a very decent bottle of red. Why not try something new? Madrid has been producing some great wines recently if you are ready to venture away from Rioja.
Happy drinking!
