Dulcería de Celaya Mexico City

A sweet tradition

""Dulcería de Celaya" in Mexico City opened more than 100 years ago and represents the rich Mexican tradition when it comes to candy really well!"

Candy is part of an important tradition in Mexican culture. This is why Dulcería de Celaya is a must while you are in Mexico City. This candy shop opened more than 100 years ago and its name comes from the city in Guanajuato, which is known for producing the best cajeta in Mexico - a caramel sauce made from goat milk that you have to try while you are in our country.

Originally, pre-Hispanic civilizations produced candy made of honey and seeds. This is how they produced alegrías, which means "joy" in Spanish. This candy, for example, is made of honey and amaranto, a local plant that has a ton of nutrients (you’ve never seen a healthier candy before!).

Later on, with the arrival of European people, other local elements where introduced – such as vanilla or chocolate – and western ingredients were incorporated as well – like milk or eggs. This way, a vast diversity of candies was created, little by little. Now we have more than 100 types of candy. Coconut candies are my favorites but anything you decide to try will be worth it!
