Mexican food is street food. Don’t let Moctezuma’s revenge intimidate you. Most of the tastiest Mexican specialties are cooked in the streets and you shouldn’t miss them.
My personal favorite is comal food. Comal is one of the many words in náhuatl that we use daily – like chocolate, tomate or mezcal – and it is a griddle where a ton of different things are done: tacos, quesadillas, tlacoyos, sopes, huaraches… and you should try them all! I love this type of food because, unlike most street food in Mexico, it is not deep-fried and for that reason it is not that heavy.
One of the street stands a.k.a. changarros where you will find delicious quesadillas, gorditas, and sopes is located in Durango street, between Cozumel and Sonora, right in front of OXXO. All the stews they use for stuffing the quesadillas taste great, and the dough for the tortillas is made right at the moment. My absolute favorite is the quesadilla de hongos con queso (mushrooms with cheese), but don't believe me. Try them and pick your fave.
