There is something quietly magnetic about WERK7 Theater, tucked into the revitalised warehouses of Munich’s Werksviertel-Mitte. The building still carries traces of its industrial past – tall, smooth concrete walls, wide open spaces, a sense of history humming in the rafters – yet it has been transformed into an intimate performance space that feels unmistakably contemporary.
What struck me most on arriving was the way the theatre collapses any barrier between audience and stage. You walk across the very boards where actors will soon stand, the 180-degree seating drawing you into a shared, almost communal circle. It’s a place where performance feels close enough to touch.
I experienced this closeness firsthand during the Jordan Prince show in October. His warm, quick-witted storytelling – about life as an American in Bavaria – felt perfectly suited to WERK7’s enveloping layout. Laughter travelled easily through the room, and the intimacy of the space made every glance, every expression, feel amplified. It was the kind of evening where you leave feeling slightly lighter, still smiling as you step back into the bright, buzzing energy of Werksviertel.
WERK7 often hosts a varied programme of performances: comedy, musicals, concerts and smaller creative productions that thrive in its close-knit atmosphere. If you find yourself in Munich and want a cultural night out that feels both local and refreshingly modern, it’s worth checking what’s on. Chances are you’ll discover something unexpected – and you’ll experience it in a space that brings you right into the heart of the performance.
