If you're in the mood for a hidden gem in Rotterdam, look no further than Broodje Frikandelpan. This spot is so secretive it doesn’t even show up on Google Maps. I passed by it countless times, only to find it closed. That’s because they’re only open on Saturdays from 13:00 to 16:00.
The main attraction? An Indonesian meatball sandwich that’s simply delicious. The frikadel is a round, compact meatball seasoned to perfection, topped with ketjap mayonnaise, cucumber atjar, and crispy fried onions. The combination is a smushy, flavorful delight.
The sandwich is served from an old brugwachtershuisje (bridge keeper’s house), adding to its charm. The owner also runs Ap Halen, a well-loved Indonesian dinner spot in Rotterdam. You can take your sandwich to go, or grab one of the few tables outside if you’re lucky.
But here’s a tip: go early. The later you arrive, the greater the chance they’ll be sold out, leaving you with nothing but the scent of missed opportunity.
