When it comes to family-owned businesses in the city, Haight Street Market (Gus’ Market) is far and away the most well-known and successful. Having lived in the area all my life, I literally grew up on Gus’ food. I’d come here both for impromptu lunch runs as well as weekend grocery missions. Every day, all day, this place is hopping; offering both high-quality groceries and home-cooked food, it’s a true neighborhood staple. They have everything from a Poke-bar to a coffee shop to literally dozens of Kombucha options. The staff is always friendly, the music is always great, and the food is always top-notch. Even for someone just passing through, I recommend stopping to enjoy a snack on their store-front patio.

Sadly Gus passed away a few years ago, but his family continues to run the store, carrying on his legacy. At his funeral was everyone from store customers to the mayor of San Francisco–a true testament to how important this place’s role is in the community.

The market is halfway down the block from the Haight-Ashbury intersection. The 33, 6, 7 and 43 buses all go to Haight, which itself is definitely a must-see destination in the city.
