Is it shameless to plug a fairly commonplace Irish sports pub when you're introducing your reader to the hidden treasures of Den Haag, The Netherlands? Perhaps. But I always hold in high regard a pub that brings together nations in a way where everyone feels at home. Oh yes, there are the futbol matches played on multiple screens, a small stage where local live musicians, standup comics and karaoke misfits can find (or not find) an audience, as well as a respectable pub quiz and good ales, stouts and lagers on tap.
But there is an additional welcoming, intimate feeling that is perhaps missing elsewhere. Maybe it's because the beer garden is actually part of the adjacent royal palace gardens. Or maybe that the bartenders learn your name (and your dog's name) quickly, and they won't need reminding by your third visit. Maybe the draw is the kitchen, offering the best nachos in all of Holland, which tells you everything you need to know about O'Casey's and its approach to food...not to mention (ahem) Holland.
