I have no idea where The Moped got its name from. There's not much evidence of scooters, it's not a 'mod' bar (quite the opposite, in fact), and it's not a cafe on the back of a moped.
It is, however, an excellent venue replete with cinema, kitchen, and a liberal infusion of hipsterness. Located a stone's throw from Rochusmarkt on the comparatively hidden Salmgasse, this is one of the best venues in the third district, and not too far from the city centre - a trendy yet quiet spot, fantastic for an unplanned weekend night out. There are three rooms: a smoking-friendly bar; a non-smoking room separated from the bar by a glass door; a lounge with a large screen which shows that crime show Tatort on a Sunday night.
The Moped isn't particularly big but its intimacy lends to the atmosphere. It fills quite quickly, particularly at the weekend, so it is advisable not to leave it too late. The fact that the Moped is hard to define means that there is often an eclectic clientele; some people come early for dinner - it's what people in Vienna might call a Lokal - which is neither a restaurant nor a bar, but something in between - while others come just to drink, smoke, and hang out. All told, the atmosphere in Das Moped is very relaxed, enjoyable, and comfortable. A great place to go, especially if you're in the third district!
