Vienna is perfect for biking, but you can also drive along the Donaukanal and the Danube in either direction and get to nearby towns and villages. When I am on my way northwest, I always stop by Gasthaus Käpt’n Otto (Captain Otto). It is still in Vienna and close to the city hiking path 1, Kahlenberg and the vineyards.
The Gasthaus has been run by the same family for three generations. They are incredibly warm and welcoming and always have a smile on their face. On the way out of Vienna, I like to enjoy a good coffee with some homemade cake here, which is simply delicious - and if it's summer, on the way back, some “Brettljausen” and a cold draft beer to end the day.
They also offer proper meals - typical Viennese kitchen - and it's self-service. There is a window to order and chat with the owner. Then you take your food, snacks and/or drinks, and sit at the long wooden tables right next to the Danube and enjoy.
