Vienna is perfect for biking, but you can also drive along the Donaukanal and the Danube in either direction and get to nearby towns and villages. When I am on my way northwest, I always stop by Gasthaus Käpt’n Otto (Captain Otto). It is still in Vienna and close to the city hiking path 1, Kahlenberg and the vineyards.
The Gasthaus is run by a family for three generations. They are incredibly warm and welcoming and always have a smile on their face. On the way out of Vienna, I like to enjoy a good coffee with some homemade cake here, which is simply delicious – and on the way back, some “Brettljausen” (see Emmerich article) and a cold draft beer to end the day.
They also offer proper meals – typical Viennese kitchen – and it’s self-service. There is a window where you can order what you want and chat with the owner. Then you take your food, snacks and/or drinks, and sit at the long wooden tables right next to the Danube and enjoy.
