Chocolate brioches, eclairs, millefeuilles…Un je ne sais Quoi is my go-to place for a sweet fix with a French twist. The bakery, owned by a family who moved from France, is more authentic than any other French bakery I have come across in D.C.
The merveilleux, made up of layers of meringue and ganache and sprinkled with chocolate shavings, are a fan favorite. Here they come in a variety of flavors: chocolate, vanilla, and speculoos. I have tried all three and can report that they are delicious.
If you happen to stop by during the holidays, be sure to order a galette de rois. This galette is meant to be enjoyed by a group of people. A small toy is hidden inside (usually a very ornate porcelain toy), and the eater who finds it is crowned king/queen for the night.
The space is invitingly small and cozy, but the pastries are also available for takeaway.
