I have to admit that this bistro is a bit "out of the way" in a neighbourhood called Trešnjevka, but it is really worth visiting.
As you are approaching a family house with a small terrace on the first floor, maybe you don't expect much of it. But Šalša will host you well with some great food served in a very interesting interior in which a big school board with daily offers dominates. If you find yourself in Šalsa, for example, from 11:00 - 14:00 you can choose from one of three daily specialities which are on the daily menu. It is advisable to come around noon or 13:00 so you do not miss their specialities like grilled mackerel with relish of olives, lemon and parsley with potatoes and celery, or octopus and hake ragout with root vegetables and noodles.
In case you come a little bit later in the day, let's say around 18:00 or later, there is a great possibility the daily specialties are sold out. Then opt for a hamburger and you won't regret it. It is one of the best in town – the meat perfectly prepared and of a decent thickness, as well as the hamburger rolls with divine supplements such as roasted peppers and fresh green onions or maybe garnish with sprouts.
The price of the meals in Šalša, which is always up to 40 kn (€ 5.50), definitely proves that a great meal doesn't have to be boring and/or expensive.
