Atria Institute on Gender Equality and Women’s History is a public library, heritage archive, and a research institute dedicated to gender equality, women’s history, and feminist studies. It’s the place to go if you need to research something or are simply in the mood for some feminist literature. Between 2009 and 2013, Atria was known as the Aletta Institute for Women's History, named in honour of the first Dutch woman doctor. Alleta’s papers are part of the institute’s archive, and they were also digitalised and made available to the public.
This institute is located on a very busy street in Amsterdam, but once you step inside, you’re immersed in the quiet atmosphere of the place, where only rustling pages and the occasional whisper can be heard.
You can make an appointment to visit and browse the books, magazines and archives. If you live in the Netherlands or Belgium, you can also borrow books. There are over 100,000 books, 30,000 photographs/posters, and thousands of periodicals to choose from. You can find here anything from historic to contemporary feminist and gender-related materials. Guided tours for groups are available as well (except in July and August).
