Amsterdam’s Red Light District isn’t the kind of place that comes to mind when thinking about having a coffee with friends. However, there is a spot where I love taking my friends or just going there by myself, because of its cosiness and the beautiful courtyard. This is De Koffieschenkerij, a café tucked inside a former sacristy of De Oude Kerk that dates back to 1306. Right from the moment you walk inside the cafe, you can feel the history around you. The walls, ceiling, and old paintings make it a different kind of coffee stop.
One of my favorite things about this café, apart from the specialty coffee, is the quiet courtyard terrace. It’s like a hidden garden where you can sip your coffee and enjoy a cake, right in the middle of the crowds, yet so calm and relaxed. Another lovely spot, more for the rainy days, is their attic. The menu is simple but tasty: croissants with butter and jam, apple pie, carrot cake, almond cake, artisan coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
And right next to it, the Oude Kerk features contemporary art exhibitions and events, so make sure to check out its schedule as well.
