De neef van Fred Amsterdam

Water terrace perfection

Isidore from Amsterdam

Hi! My name is Isidore and I was born and raised in Amsterdam. I have always been a curious person so I decided to make it my job! I am a journalist for a Dutch broadcaster and I make shows about breaking stigmas and about topics that are important in today's society. As a journalist, I also LOVE writing a lot. "They created a terrace that makes you feel like you are basically in the water, with a little bar next to it. Boats float by and get a quick drink to go..."

When De need van Fred first opened in 2021, I was a skeptic: the cafe that was there before was a place I grew up with and somehow I became a traditional woman that wanted everything in the neighborhood to stay the same. So when I first visited De neef van Fred, my bar was high. Luckily, they pleasantly surprised me. The interior is small, yet cozy, but what really makes this spot a good one is their terrace.

The terrace has three layers: one is the obvious terrace right in front of the cafe. The second one is picnic tables across the street and the third one is the best one - right next to the water and not visible when you walk on the street, a true hidden gem!

They created a terrace that makes you feel like you are basically in the water, with a little bar next to it. A lot of boats float by and get a quick drink for on-the-go. It is fun to see and creates a cozy atmosphere. One thing: If you go, bring sunscreen! The place gets a lot of sun, but stay safe!

Bakkerij Ulmus

Sourdough bakery!

I know that sounds dramatic, but their pastries are irresistible! Everything is sourdough based, which means they make their own yeast for the bread.

There is also a greenhouse where locals can bring their compost. In the other garden, there are bees and apple trees, and they sell their honey as well.
