For food lovers who enjoy cooking from scratch with organic ingredients or sourcing artisanal goods directly from producers, the Biological Market at Noordermarkt is a must-visit. Held every Saturday in the square of the same name, this is a farmers market brimming with fresh organic vegetables, fruit, bread, cheese, mushrooms, herbs, meat, fish, honey, flowers and other delicious foods. The best in town, in my opinion. Also, it’s the first Organic Farmers Market in the Netherlands, founded in 1987.
It’s a pleasure to walk around the stalls and talk directly to the people who grew the food, ask them anything you want to know (if they have the time, as it gets quite busy), or simply thank them for their good work. This market offers vegetables and fruit varieties that you can’t find in other shops in Amsterdam, like heirloom tomatoes or rare types of pumpkins. My favourite stall is the one selling all kinds of fresh herbs and sauces, but I also love sampling cheeses and checking out the mushroom stall. Next to the farmers market, there’s also a small flea market.
Noordermarkt is located in the beautiful Jordaan neighbourhood, on the Prinsengracht canal and right next to the famous Winkel43, which is known as serving the best apple pie in Amsterdam and always has a queue at the entrance.
