What is Happening Here Gallery - WIHH - in Amsterdam is located in a 2200 m2 space and it used to be (among many other things) a bank! I would not have been able to discover it unless a friend of mine hadn't invited me to visit an exhibition opening, so it is definitely my little Amsterdam hidden art gem. What I found quite impressive is the fact that it is not so clearly visible from the outside and that it is still possible to see the doors of bank vaults that were once used to keep money safe!
What is Happening Here Gallery is in a very central location in Amsterdam, so a trip to it can also be combined with a coffee, bar, or restaurant nearby. It is free to visit and exhibits contemporary art and installations on multiple floors. Don’t forget to leave donations to support it. My favorite part is going to the basement area, where it is possible to clearly see what still remains of the bank's features. It is also possible to purchase items in their mini shopping area.
You can follow what is ongoing on their Instagram page or see the event’s agenda on their website. Keep in mind that the opening times sometimes vary, so check the website to be on the safe side. Also, the most relevant information can be found on their Instagram page.
As it often closes at 18:00, why not grab a drink at De Thuisborrel Club afterward?
