Hitchcocktales is just next to my father’s apartment on Porinou St in Athens – right across the street from Froots. Porinou itself is a quiet little sidestreet right next to the Akropoli Metro Station, perfect if you want to forget you’re just 100m from the Acropolis Museum and all the bustle of Makrygianni St. I had been passing by this bar for years and I was always intrigued by its inviting exterior. Those pillows and candles they had at the windowsill were the final straw and I decided to visit.
The first time I went there I was on my own, which was just as well, because I struck up a conversation with the barman and waitress in no time. I got a Skin Game gin and vodka sour drink (all cocktails are aptly named after Hitchcock films) which was brought to me in a ceramic tiki statue. It was pretty but I couldn’t see how much drink I had left and thus sipped it up in no time at all! A bowl of peppered roast pita chips to nibble on was brought to me with my cocktail which was refilled after I practically devoured its contents in a matter of minutes. Definitely one of the better snacks I’ve had together with a drink.
Hitchcocktales, simply put, is an incredibly pleasant place that gives off very positive vibes. Perfect location, quiet yet central, beautiful decoration, great people. Give it a shot if you’re around Plaka or the Acropolis after dark.
