The art in Länggasse is diverse: Einstein’s brain, clever birds or gravestones by various artists in the Bremgartenfriedhof (the cemetery in this quarter) – all different kinds of art, all in public spaces – and therefore all free of charge. The route starts at the Grosse Schanze and zigzags from there through the quarter, ending at the Bremgartenfriedhof.
It is just one of several walks offered by Kultur Stadt Bern – the culture department of the city. Each walk is accompanied by a small guidebook that briefly describes the route and the works of art.
It took me three hours to walk through Länggasse and see all the artworks. My route took me past the «Magic Gate» by Walter «Pips» Vögeli, on to St. Paul’s Church and Nina Heinzel’s sculpture – the shiny golden brain of Albert Einstein high up on the roof of Neufeld High School.
My morning was filled with a new perspective on the different corners of the quarter, but also with snack stops. A stop at the Bohnenblust bakery or the Caffè Bar Sattler is worthwhile to refuel for the rest of the tour. Further recommendations for eating and drinking can also be found in the back of the guide from Kultur Stadt Bern.
And if you haven’t had enough after the quarter of Länggasse, there are five more walks through the city districts of Bern, all of which can be found on this webpage.
