If you'd like to see the naked truth about a city, a wise first step is to visit a local market where residents buy their food. My favourite in Budapest is a charming outdoor market right next to Hunyadi Square, a lovely green space in the VI. district. Known simply as "A Hunyadi," it's one of the city's oldest municipally funded markets, nestled in the heart of Budapest.
Every Saturday, under the pavilions, you can find locally grown fruits, vegetables, pastries, meat, and occasionally cheese sold by kind farmers and producers who are proud to show their own fresh fruits and vegetables. Hunyadi tér also has a market hall, but I would recommend the outdoor one, right by the park.
Once you've shown up here a few times, the vendors often recognise you and have a few kind words to you while helping to choose their best products for you. It's these moments that make a city start to feel like home.
