When in Belgium, one has to eat French fries. In every Belgian city you will find plenty of places to have them, but in Ghent I recommend you head towards Frituur Tartaar. This newbie in town just opened its doors and it has already become a legend for the locals. Usually, a ‘frituur’ (as we call those places in Dutch) doesn’t come with a lot of cosiness and fancy decoration. However, in Frituur Tartaar they got the message: good food must be pleasing to the taste as well as the eye. The interior is a successful combination of industrial, Scandinavian and vintage styles. A rough brick wall on the side shows the robust character of this place. When the weather is good, you can also eat outside.
And then, what else? The food of course. If you ask me, this place stands out most because of the freshness of the meals, the use of local products and the fact that there is an option for everyone, whether you’re a meat lover, a vegetarian or vegan. There is the finger-licking, freshly prepared tartar sauce, the fried vegetables and the fries with Gantoise stew sauce (with or without the meat, as you wish). Frituur Tartare equals good Belgian snacks with a twist.
