Madrid is full of amazing theatres. From the big name Broadway-style musicals to gorgeous flamenco performances and famous operas, the streets of the city centre ring out with song and dance every night of the week. But a short metro ride away, in the wonderful Chamberí neighbourhood, are the Teatros del Canal, the best place to take in cutting-edge theatre, dance, music, flamenco and cabaret in an intimate setting.
Teatros del Canal, a modern artistic complex designed by architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg and inaugurated in 2009, was the winner of the National Prize for Architecture in 2018. It is 35,000 square feet, consisting of 4 performance rooms and the Canal Choreographic Center, with the brilliant choreographer, Blanca Li at the helm. The Teatros del Canal is also a center devoted to the study and creation of all styles of dance, and they showcase their amazing work on the stage here.
With tickets starting from €9 for many performances, Teatros del Canal makes culture accessible to everyone. And their programming is extensive. I have enjoyed numerous shows here, ranging from a Hip Hop rendition of The Nutcracker to a contemporary spin on Madame Bovary. This is one of the most diverse spaces in the city for arts and culture and it is evident that the folks here take a great deal of pride in their work. There is something for everyone at the Teatros del Canal and every show is guaranteed to be unique and enjoyable.
