Griffintown, southwest of the downtown core, isn’t just a neighbourhood; it’s a concept, a lifestyle, a vibe. The extra-wide bike lanes, the fabulously fit residents on their midday runs, and the row after row of new condo units are all evidence of the fact. That the city added a stop on the REM, the new rail system, right in this area is no accident either, providing further proof of its reputation as a new, up and coming, and trendy part of Montreal. Griffintown may still be in the process of developing its “cool” factor, but cafés like Got Soul definitely help.
Cafe or concept - call it what you will, but it’s Got Soul’s unique combination of the two which works well. It’s a small place but makes the most of the space, and fans of club music and vintage vinyl will feel right at home. Have a coffee and a cookie, then take a look at the mini black and white photo exhibit of 70s icons on the wall, followed by a rummage through record crates as you sit on retro furniture. It all combines to make you feel like you’re one of the cool kids without even trying. If that was the owner, local DJ Jojo Flores’ aim, then its mission was accomplished.
