Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in the central district.
It got its name in 1796. Before that it was anonymous - the only boulevard in Moscow for Russian nobility to stroll along. Now it is the recreation area for locals, with straight rows of trees decorated by colored highlighting in winter evenings, with a childrens' "island". People jog here in the mornings and evenings, walk with their dogs or hurry to work/education/performances. I'm never surprised when faced with an old lady running with her lively pet.
The boulevard starts at the ex-location of Pushkin's monument and ends by the Timiryazev monument which was built at the place of a burnt house. Everything is steeped in history here.
There are a lot of famous buildings around. Some of them are apartment houses which brought their owners rent profit (№9, 19; 8, 10). Café Pushkin – the main Russian gastronomy legend; Turandot restaurant, which replaced the historical town mansion of Ivan Nikolaevich Rimsky-Korsakov; Moscow Pushkin Drama theatre, where Vladimir Vysotsky worked between 1960 and 1962;MKHAT theatre, a natural landmark (an oak tree more than 215 years old grows in front of the 14th) building. You may recognize it by a metal chain around it.
Go to the beginning of Tverskoy Boulevard which is opposite the Timiryazev monument side (close to Tverskaya street). Pushkinskaya square is on your right hand where a Christmas market is usually organized.
Enjoy the center and its history!
