There are many of us who crave the outdoors, whether it be sandy beaches, snow-peaked mountains or jumping in the local watering hole. But in the city, where to with nature? Sure, many people in Munich take a day trip in the mountains and yes, it is beautiful there, but I have a secret for you: Perlach Forest.
Perlach Forest is located southeast of the centre of Munich. It is easily accessible by tram (15/25), just hop off at Klinikum Harlaching and you are there. It is a forest spanning approximately 13 km² with footpaths and bike paths weaving throughout. This makes it suitable for a bike tour or a walk through the trees.
I love being in Perlach Forest because every day of the year it is beautiful. You can experience nature so close to home. In autumn the leaves change colour, creating an impressionable array of oranges, dark greens, reds and browns. In winter, the snow falls and you can trek through, admiring nature close up in all its beauty. In summer the forest provides shade and a cool wind, in spring everything begins to come back to life, step by step.
Throughout the forest, there are little spots you can make your destination including the Perlacher Mugl, as the locals call it: a hill you can climb with a view of the Bavarian Alps on a sunny day.
If you are looking for a little nature time, then Perlach Forest is for you.
