Open only during the summer months, Tram Depot feels like a shady oasis - a laidback outdoor bar on the edge of a busy intersection. Its name and location are no coincidence, as it's surrounded by bus and tram routes, and it's just a short walk from Piramide station.
The tiny bar is designed to resemble an old-fashioned tram depot, and the vintage theme continues with the mismatched furniture and swing-seats. As soon as the bar opens again in May, the tables are filled up with tourists and locals looking for refreshment - a smoothie or iced coffee in the morning, or a cocktail at aperitivo hour, when the fairy lights come on.
Apart from its unusual location and quirky design, the most noteworthy aspects of Tram Depot are its coffee (top quality beans from an artisan roaster) and its delicious cornetti.
Tram Depot is the perfect place for a break en route to Testaccio, or after a walk on the Aventine Hill (an area distinctly lacking in bars). Just be warned that there are no toilet facilities...
