""Inat Kuća", or 'House of Spite', is an old building with an interesting story & defiant spirit, now converted into a restaurant in the center of Sarajevo."

There are a lot of traditional cuisine restaurants in the old part of Sarajevo, but this one is special for the legendary story on how it got it's name.

When the Austrian - Hungarian monarchy occupied Bosnia and Herzegovina, they began building various buildings. They wanted to build an enormous building never seen before in Sarajevo which would show the power of the monarchy. But the exact location was on the property of an old man called Benderija, a resident of Sarajevo who did not want to let them demolish his house and take his land away from him for any reason whatsoever.

After long negotiations, the stubborn man finally said that he would give up his property only if they gave him a bag of golden coins and if they move his house brick by brick to the other side of the river. They had no choice but to do exactly what he had requested for in 1895.

Since then, Benderija’s house is called “Inat kuća” (House of spite) and in 1997 it was turned into a lovely traditional Bosnian restaurant. The house is still there, defying all governments and symbolizing the stubbornness of the Bosnian people.

Inat kuća is a national restaurant with architectural values and it's under the protection of the Institute for the protection of the cultural heritage. The interior has retained the Bosnian authentic look.

You can see the interior here.

Have a great meal and enjoy Sarajevo history.
