Myllypuro is a small stream that is hidden inside the suburban housing and industrial area on the western end of Tampere. To go and find its path in the thick nature reserve area, or in some places behind the houses and under the streets, is an urban adventure itself.
Many of the locals living closeby have never seen it, or don’t even know where it runs. You can read about the nature and plants in Myllypuro on Tampere city’s internet site and there is also a map on the last page of the pdf-guide of the stream and its surroundings, which is very useful when you want to follow its path. Last autumn, I decided to walk along the whole stream from north to south. I took my bike with me which turned out to be a rather bad idea since I had to leave it waiting a long time when I wanted to get through the bushes to see the water more closely.
A better way to see it would be taking the bus to either end of the stream and then walking near the banks or in some places on the trails. You should avoid going to people’s backyards in the north, though. In the southern part there are two easily accessible beautiful waterfalls. The first is really in the woods but the second one is just by the high apartment building and the address and the picture of my article is taken on that spot.
