Appels en Peren is located to the west of the centre of The Hague, between Kijkduin and the main hospital HMC Westeinde in the beautiful borough of the Vruchtenbuurt, in which streets are named after fruits (Vrucht in Dutch translating to fruit in English). For this reason alone, it might be fun to take a stroll around this area.
Appels en Peren is a place where you can come for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, a typically Dutch “borrel” with friends, or an extensive dinner. They manage to combine it all, their amazing staff making you feel welcome and instantly at ease at any time. Appels en Peren is very popular among locals and, thus, often quite busy, but they do take reservations, which could come in handy if you like planning ahead. I couldn’t even say which time of day my favourite would be at Appels en Peren – I love their club sandwich, but sometimes I go there for a coffee (they get their beans from Bocca Coffee Roasters in Amsterdam) or to work on my laptop. They are open seven days a week and have a sunny outdoor terrace, which they keep open almost during the entire year. I’ve sat outside at Appels en Peren in winter, wrapped in a blanket with a warm cup of tea—that can be cosy too!
Insider Tip: An absolute must-try is their appeltaart, a traditional Dutch apple pie—after all, they’re not called Appels en Peren for nothing!
