Meet Valencia's oldest and most fascinating inhabitants. Their stories would be incredible if only they could talk... Explore Valencia through its ancient trees.
Valencia is famous for its beautiful parks. However, many people don't know that the city has over 500 monumental trees. You can recognise them by a little sign: "Arbre Monumental," followed by the species name and origin. Let me introduce you to Valencia's top 3 most impressive leafy residents.
Meet "Titan", Valencia's most iconic tree with a turbulent life. Meant to be a magnolia, this amazing ficus, a Moreton Bay fig, was planted by mistake in 1852. It has endured a civil war, a dictatorship, and a flood. Not long ago, the ficus tree won a battle against a nearby gas station and recently snapped a huge branch. Titan will wait for you in El Parterre.
Don't overlook "Skinny Rebel". A row of impressive palm trees forms the main entrance path to the Jardines del Real. One palm refuses to conform, its slender body towering above the others. Gardeners mistakenly planted a tall Washingtonia palm instead of the intended Washingtonia filifera.
Finally, meet the family of "Drunk Sticks" or "Fat Bellies." Their bottle-shaped trunks inspired their somewhat unflattering nicknames. These Chorisia speciosa trees are located in the El Bosque de Palo Borracho (the Forest of the Drunken Sticks), part of the Jardín del Turia. Drunk or not, their giant thorns are definitely sharp.
