If you visit Valencia, don't miss the stunning Jardín de Monforte, a hidden garden in the middle of the city many people overlook.
The Jardín de Monforte is one of Valencia's few remaining historic gardens. It's surprising to find it here in an area with busy roads and modern buildings. The garden is tucked away behind a high wall. As you step inside, you'll be amazed by what you see: a fairytale-like setting with lush greenery and romantic statues.
In the 19th century, Jardín de Monforte was created as a private garden, but today, it is open to the public and free to visit. The park is divided into two parts. The first section features a mansion, statues, and a hedge labyrinth. On the side is a tunnel completely covered in bougainvillaeas, which turn purple when in bloom. You can see this from May on. The second part of the park becomes wilder with its century-old magnolia, laurel and ginkgo trees. I love this place for taking photos, having lunch, or relaxing in the shade.
Two lion figures guard the entrance to the garden. The statues were made for the Madrid Congress Palace but never installed there. People thought they looked like rabid dogs and were far too small. The lions ended up in Valencia's Jardín de Monforte and still seem to enjoy it.
Love nature? Two great parks are nearby: Jardines del Real-Viveros and Jardín del Turia.
