You either love or hate it: this is the strangest house in Valencia, only its resident, Carles Recio, is even more remarkable.
When I discovered this building by chance in Valencia's Monteolivete neighbourhood, I hardly knew where to look. The facade is adorned with male genitals depicted in both 2D and 3D and copulating figures. Women with three breasts are staring at you.
The resident and famous writer, Carles Recio, is surrounded by suspicious rumours. He made headlines in national and international news because he seemed to earn over ten years' salary by pretending to work.
A closer look at the facade reveals stunning details. Ceramic tiles around the garage depict the entire history of Valencia. Peer through the front door to catch a glimpse of the interior: a drawing of the young Carles with his mother, along with distinctive blue tiles and decorative elements.
Recio used ceramic tiles with a metallic gold reflection for his home. The facade takes on a beautiful golden glow when the sun shines on the mosaics. To see this, visit the house between 12:00 and 14:00.
What I find the most intriguing about this building is that it is such an odd loner in this ordinary street. The neat, grey facade of the neighbours with the plants in front makes the contrast even bigger.
Admire the tiny antique houses across the street. If you're interested in another unique facade, read about Casa Judiá, a stunning example of Art Deco architecture.
